“O Público Vai ao Teatro is a project to develop audiences for the performing arts which, in its various editions, has helped to bring participants closer to and familiarize them with cultural institutions and their programming, as well as participation and empowerment in the face of cultural governance phenomena. In this sense, positive non-attenders are favoured, i.e. people with no cultural enjoyment habits but who show a predisposition to becoming an audience for the performing arts). In a double understanding, this project aims, on the one hand, to continue the regular work of monitoring the Theatre’s programming, opening up spaces for contact with the different teams involved and for sharing the multiple experiences of reception. On the other hand, can be understood as a space open to the trial of renewal strategies for involving citizens in the workings of cultural institutions, thus contributing to the shared construction of perspectives. As an example of this dual intention, we can mention the creation of the ‘Commissão de Público’ (Audience Committee) – a permanent committee of spectators which, in its inception, envisages involvement in the regular running of the cultural equipment provides for participation in the regular running of the cultural center in its multiple dimensions”.
